The men at Manzanar often experienced greater personal destruction due to the societal expectations placed on them as providers and protectors, which were undermined by their incarceration. Many men felt a loss of identity and purpose, as they were unable to fulfill their roles in the face of discrimination and confinement. Additionally, the psychological burden of incarceration, compounded by feelings of helplessness and frustration, affected men more intensely, leading to higher instances of stress and despair. In contrast, women and children often found ways to adapt and create community support systems, which helped mitigate some of the emotional toll.
