Very much the values of the well-run grocery, where she was brought up.

It was the small-business virtues of self-reliance, frugal living, hard saving and cutting according to cloth - backed by domestic respectability and the urge to better oneself.

It ran directly counter to the Sixties culture of drugs, louche living and socialist dumbing-down, and Thatcher's popularity was seen as a strong reaction against all of that.
