What is meant by the deep South?

The Deep South is the states of the United States along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and part of the Western Atlantic Ocean. The extreme westerly state is Texas and the most easterly is South Carolina. In between those extremes are: Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

The Deep South is often seen as more of a cultural area than a geographic one.
