The Molisch test is not positive in substances that do not contain carbohydrates or those that do not readily form a purple complex with α-naphthol in the presence of sulfuric acid. This includes pure fats, proteins, and some non-carbohydrate organic compounds. Additionally, certain modified or degraded carbohydrates may also yield a negative result.
