Why did southerners want a democrat for president in 1860?

The majority of Democrats were pro-slavery at the start of the Civil War, and the southern slave owners believed Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln to be an abolitionist. They knew a democratic president would likely be pro-states rights, and would allow them to do pretty much what they pleased.
