What did Sunni Muslims believe about the leadership succession after the death of Prophet Muhammad?

Sunni Muslims believe that the leadership succession after the death of Prophet Muhammad should be based on the consensus of the community, with the most qualified individual chosen as the leader. They do not believe that leadership should be restricted to the Prophet's family.
