Who built sanchi stupa and why?

The Sanchi Stupa was built by Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan dynasty in the 3rd century BCE. It was constructed to enshrine relics of Buddha and serve as an important Buddhist pilgrimage site. Ashoka was a fervent supporter of Buddhism and used his influence to spread its teachings.
