Many women were suddenly working outside the home for the first time. Due to a shortage of male workers, women took on jobs in factories, on farms, driving trucks- in some cases flying airplanes- that had previously been done only by men. There were even women only professional Baseball teams. Large numbers of women also joined the Armed Forces to serve in non-combat roles such as clerks and drivers (In Great Britain, that included a very young Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth)
