Which way does smoke travel up or down?

Smoke typically travels upward because it is made up of hot air and particulates that are less dense than the surrounding cooler air. As the smoke rises, it disperses and can spread horizontally as well, depending on air currents. In confined spaces, smoke may also accumulate near the ceiling before descending as it cools and loses buoyancy.
