What does it mean when a guy says he doesn't know what he would do without you?

I just wanted to add that it depends on the context. Who is the guy to you and did he mean it literally as a response to something specific or were you sitting on the beach in front of the ocean staring at the moonlight pondering life and he said, "I don't know what I would do without you."

What were you doing when he said it. What is the guy to you? What type of guy is it?

The reason I said what type of guy is because if you had to ask that question about a person you are having a relationship with, you should not have to ask that question. In my mind, it would mean you were unclear about how he felt about you.

This would indicate that he simply stated something to hold your heart and his actions must confuse you. (I am speculating to illustrate a point)
