35mm film is digitally scanned frame by frame to a computer hard drive. After scanning the entire film, it is then retouched each frame for scratches, color fade, color contrast & brightness. This is done via a rendering software. The sound track is also redone and retracked so it can be recognised by amplifiers that can play 5.1 - 7.1 and even THX audio. At this stage the film is also determined its ratio and crop size. Usual its set up for 16:9 ratio since it will be redone for home BluRay discs or reshown in theaters in its now digital format. The end result if done properly is a movie that will have the vibrance when it was first released.
