What would cause the electronic door locks of a car to operate by themselves?

I think my parents told me it was either a timer or a speed detector. My best guess would be the speed detector because you could leave your car unlocked all night and someone could come and steal your stuff. It hasn't happened to me before, but Mom got a little upset when she thought I left the car unlocked even though it was her.
