You can use many household items to clean jewelry. You could use Windex, alcohol, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, or even just soap and water. I would use caution when using the chemicals just mentioned. I have even seen toothpaste used on inexpensive jewelry pieces, but again I would use caution because toothpaste is abrasive. I would never use any of these chemicals on fine jewelry. You could cause damage.
A better solution is to use half Mr. Clean and water with a small amount of ammonia. Many jewelry stores use this solution and it is safe for all jewelry.
For tarnished sterling silver baking soda can be mixed with water until you get a paste. Use this paste to rub off the tarnish.
