He looked at the problem from a different perspective. Problem solving depends upon viewing the subject matter in ways that may be considered unconventional. Why build a bridge to cross a body of water when you can use aboat - - a simple and more economical approach with the additional advantage of portability and versatility. In a world where only bridges were used and boats never existed, this "idea" would revolutionize the land travel industry. This way of thinking is called ingenious or innovative, but to the inventor it is just an extension of a thorough understanding of the problem at hand. A mind trained to understand how things work by constantly seeking answers to even the most mundane questions (like why is the sky blue or the grass green?) can accomplish seemingly impossible tasks. Marvin Camras discovered the method and means of magnetic recording by combining his knowledge of the physics of sound with the properties of magnetism. By recording symmetrically around a wire with a magnetic field and an air gap, instead of a magnetised stylus, he could eliminate the sound distortion caused by the twisting and turning of the wire in playback. A very simple solution but one that no one else ever thought of before. Innovation and ingenuity usually come from taking a different approach or perspective to the problem at hand, but even Marvin Camras would often admit, "there's always got to be a little luck involved."
