The Colossus was created by British engineer Tommy Flowers and his team at Bletchley Park during World War II. It was the world's first programmable digital computer, designed to break the German Lorenz cipher. The project was initiated in response to the need for more advanced cryptographic techniques to aid the Allied war effort. The first Colossus became operational in 1944.
