What is the difference between tools and equipment?

Tools are generally thought to be a device such as a saw or drill, something used to perform task or trade, an artist may consider his paint brush a tool of his trade or a doctor a stethoscope his tool of this trade.

Equipment would be thought of as an act of being equipped with the proper tools to do a job. Or we generally refer to very large tools as being equipment such as a backhoe.
