How many different tangram shapes are possible?

There are theoretically an infinite number of tangram shapes that can be created, as tangrams consist of seven geometric pieces (called tans) that can be arranged in numerous combinations. However, traditionally, there are over 600 recognized shapes that can be formed from these pieces, ranging from animals and people to objects and abstract designs. The creativity involved in arranging the tans allows for endless variations.
