Constituting two thirds of the country's $3 Billion (USD) per year toll industry, the tolling agencies of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania sought to reduce congestion on some of their busiest roadways and toll plazas. The E-ZPass trademark has been aggressively protected by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey since it's inaugural deployment on August 3, 1993. By February 6, 1997, it had been installed along the entire length of the New York State Thruway. The E-ZPass Interagency Group now has 38 member agencies operating in 16 states.
