Every mollusk can theoretically grow natural pearls. But pearls from mollusks such as clams are very rare, and they are not actually considered pearls. Clams are not nacreous so they do not excrete the combination of aragonite and calcite known as nacre which is the building block of pearls. Their excretions instead are known as calcareous concretions. These "pearls" are not usually of much value and only hold a place in the collectors' market.
