Why the majority of sporting events are arranged in particular age groups?

To make the competition fair. Would a 10 year old stand any chance against a man in football? Would a U11 team face the All Blacks in Rugby... no they are unfair so major boards divide up the ages to make it fair so 12 year olds play against other 12 year olds
