How you get the cursor back to normal in gimp?

It would seem you cannot. However, you can select the "move" tool (up/down/left/right blue arrow tool) and it will work like a pointer.

I agree, even of the functionality of the "move" tool and the regular pointer are virtually identical, the context is different and a regular pointer tool option would be a welcome addition for many.
