How did the samurai travel?

Around the time the Mongrol fleet invaded Japan the samurai began to change the way the did battle and rather than on horseback with bow and arrow the warriors relied more and more on sWords and traveled by foot.

During peaceful times the daimyo and high officials, in a pageant to show rank and status, traveled in palanquins made of lacquered wood and split bamboo carried on the shoulders of eight to a dozen bearers. The lesser officials and ordinary samurai, foot soldiers, clerks, sevants and even horseman traveled by foot.
