Why does Jem think Mrs Dubose is the most courageous woman?

Atticus says Mrs. Dubose is the bravest person he ever met because she was addicted to morphine and she decided to quit it so she could be 'alive' for the last part of her life instead of it being all fuzzy from the morphine.
