They begin as a baby harp seal, with white fur, to protect them from predators. After about 3 weeks, they begin to lose their fur and obtain a sleek gray leather coat. Beyond this point, they spend most of their life in the water feeding on small fish like shrimp salmon, octopus, flounder, cod, plankton, and squid. A full grown harp seal can weigh as much as 400 lbs and be between 5 and 6 feet long.
