Specifically, poinsettias do not like conditions that support either drying out or water-logging of roots and soils. On the other hand, they need soil to have good drainage and not pool moisture. So moisture must have a way out at the bottom of the pot. Saucers nevertheless must be emptied regularly. Standing water encourages root and stem problems in poinsettias.
