Clay or plastic containers that allow for good drainageare the types of pots in which poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) typically are grown.
Specifically, poinsettias do not like conditions that support either drying out or water-logging of roots and soils. They therefore need soil that is high in aeration, drainage, moisture and nutrition. On the one hand, they need soil that retains moisture. On the other hand, they need soil to have good drainage and not pool moisture. So moisture must have a way out at the bottom of the pot. Saucers nevertheless must be emptied regularly. Standing water encourages root and stem problems in poinsettias.
