What is the purpose of an idle control valve on a Pontiac?

The Idle control does just as the name implies. It receives commands from the ECM based on many factors. Some of these are engine temp, ambient temp, engine load at idle (IE a/c on). and so on. It allows for a leaner fuel mixture and helps prevent stall outs.
