The melody was written by Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill in 1893 who were both Kindergarten teachers in Louisville Kentucky. The original song was "Good Morning To All" and was written so it would be easy for children to remember.

The lyrics were first printed in 1912 but were probably in circulation earlier than that.
