At what time intervals should oil changes be performed to extend the life of a cars engine?

For many years the oil change interval was every 3 months or 3000 miles. In recent years GM and Ford have both recommended the oil be changed every 5 to 7 months or 5000 to 7000 miles. They cite oil and engines being a better quality as the reason for this change in intervals.
