Why was France attacked in the D-day invasion?

France itself was not the target on D-Day, the target was the Nazi German forces in France, which the Allies were trying to defeat by taking the fight back to Western Europe. The ultimate aim was to get rid of the Nazi regime lead by Hitler. The aim succeded eventually.
