Which European country set up a trading center in what in now NYC?

The Netherlands established a trading center in what is now New York City, originally called New Amsterdam, in the early 17th century. The settlement was part of the Dutch West India Company's efforts to capitalize on the lucrative fur trade. In 1664, the British seized control of the area and renamed it New York.
