Why did people like Saint Nicholas?

St. Nicholas was the Patron Saint of Children. He was an exceptionally kind man who did a number of wonderful acts such as: Bringing three murdered boys to life and protecting several sailors at sea by turning the ocean into calm from angry so they could get home safely. He also secretly gave money to a poor man so that he could provide dowries for his three daughters.
