What is ipicac?

Ipecac, specifically ipecac syrup, is a medication derived from the dried roots of the ipecacuanha plant. It was historically used to induce vomiting in cases of poisoning or overdose, but its use has declined due to potential side effects and the availability of safer alternatives. The American Academy of Pediatrics no longer recommends it for this purpose, as it does not significantly improve outcomes in poisoning cases.
