From beginning of time, there was straight ahead, back, left and right. These were given direction from the sun. Away from the sun at noon in the northern hemisphere was called borealis, later called North by the Germanic speakers. Toward the sun was called australis, renames South. Facing north, occidentalis was on your left, later called west and orientalis was on the right, later called east. This renaming was done during the Migration Period.
