Unless it's uncirculated, face value only.
There's a lot of fiction surrounding these bills. Joseph Barr only served as Treasury Secretary for about 5 weeks, so people assume the bills are rare. However, it was a while before a new Secretary was appointed, so the BEP continued to churn out bills with his signature. In fact, nearly half a billion were printed before the next series started! The only reason they were uncommon in circulation is that people saved them as soon as they got one in change.
As of 01/2010 U.S. Currency Auctions lists a fair market value of an uncirculated Barr note at only $2.00. Many sellers on auction sites are under the mistaken impression that these bills are rare - or are trying to play off others' lack of knowledge - and are attempting to charge highly inflated prices.
