Onoda was the only Survivor of a group of four, 29 years after Japan's formal surrender, and 15 years after being declared legally dead in Japan, he surrendered to a Japanese tourist on the Philippine island of Lubang.

The last but not as famous was Captain of the Japanese Imperial Army Fumio Nakahira. He was still loyal to the Emperor and after 35 years still believed the was was going strong.
