Why is Nelson Mandela given the Nobel prize?

He opposed vocally but non-violently Apartheid in S Africa. He was persecuted and tortured by the authorities, and when apartheid fell he chaired the Truth and Reconcilliation Committee to bring persecutor and persecuted together without the need for violent retribution that would likely follow.
