In his will, George Washington requested that his slaves be freed upon the death of his wife, Martha Washington. He also stipulated that they be provided with clothing and provisions to help them transition to freedom. Washington's will reflected his complex views on slavery, as he acknowledged the moral imperative of freeing his enslaved workers but did so in a way that was contingent upon Martha's survival. After her death, all of his enslaved workers were indeed freed, making him one of the few Founding Fathers to take such a step.
