Harley sportster engine backfires

in my experience it was because

1/ the spark plugs were dirty ( i clean the plugs on almost every ride)

2/ the plug gap was incorrect - this stopped the problem - the preset gap was too wide.

3/ Exhaust leak if on deceleration

4/ Timing incorrect (if thru carb)

5/ incorrect valve adjustment

6/ intake valve not seated
