Blaise Pascal invented the mechanical calculator, known as the Pascaline, in 1642. He designed it to help his father, who was a tax collector, perform calculations more efficiently in managing tax computations. The Pascaline could add and subtract directly and was one of the earliest forms of a mechanical calculator.
