The third capital of Texas was originally called "Waterloo." It was renamed Austin in honor of Stephen F. Austin, who is often referred to as the "Father of Texas" for his role in leading the first successful colonization of the region by Anglo settlers. The name change occurred in 1839 when it was designated as the capital of the Republic of Texas.
