Does a 1969 Vw beetle need lead substitute in the gas?

Short answer: no. The air cooled engines have an Excellent valve train with stainless steel valves and hardenedvalve seats which seem to stand up well to todays gasoline without any lead. Todays gasolines have additives that take care of this stuff now.
