A specialist nurse is a registered practitioner who has undertaken additional training resulting in tested competency and qualification in a particular area of nursing expertise. Areas of specialism are varied and cover the spectrum of nursing and many nurses may claim specialist status due to experience within a field of practice, however usng an evidence based structured approach to develop their skills with accountable and recognised qualifications is a requirement of bodies such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council to substantiate this claim.
