Did the Ku Klux Klan try to take over the government?

Not in the Bolshevik sense, but they did try to work from within. a number of prominent politicians had Klan uniforms in the closet, some were quite open about it.While he never went public Alabama Governor George Wallace was probably a ranking ,Official-level Klansman. David Duke was a ( Grand Wizard) equivalent of general rank in the national organization, there may have been others - surely there were many among the democrats in the (Solid South). I am not aware of any current top-kick politicians who are openly Klansmen.
