How long does unopened don perignon champagne last?

I had a bottle for 15 years and we opened it last night, Valentine's Day, not much bubbly and tasted a bit fermented (i guess is the right Word) we drank it all, but was not very good. just couldn't bring myself to pour it down the sink!!

It makes better sense to buy less expensive bubbly and enjoy it often,
