No, they are actually rivals. CVS (originally started as Consumer Value Store) was founded in Massachusetts in 1963. It merged with a company called Caremark in 2007 and has hundreds of stores nationwide. Walgreen goes back to 1901 when it was founded in Illinois by Charles R. Walgreen. It too has hundreds of stores, and descendants of Mr. Walgreen ran the company for more than eight decades.
