Whatever they could find, I'd imagine. Animals, leaves, fish, nuts, berries, roots, mushrooms, bugs, birds, seaweed... They had throwing spears and woven baskets, this much I know. You should just check out a wild survival guide from the library and I'd bet you'd get a good idea.
