How was toussaint l'ouverture tricked?

Toussaint L'Ouverture was tricked through a deceptive agreement with the French authorities in 1802. After initially being promised autonomy for Haiti, he was lured into a meeting under the pretense of negotiating peace. Instead, he was captured and later deported to France, where he died in prison.
