What is the definition of pagoda?

Pagoda is a general English term related to the multi-tiered or multi eaved Oriental (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Nepalese or Vietnamese) structure modeled after the Indian stupa designed as a tomb. While generally viewed as a Bhuddist edifice it is also associated with Shinto and other religions and may be located near a temple or shrine. It is most often used in its larger but shorter Architecture as a kind of hostel or as rectory. In modern generic terms the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and Taipei 101 are stylized pagodas.
