"Point of no return" is a point during a long over water flight at which an aircraft does not have sufficient fuel to return to it's point of origin From that point on it must continue it's progress toward it's original destination OR divert to a closer airport on the far side of the body of water it is transiting. It is a concern for both civilian and all but the longest range military aircraft.
