No number lines are infinite in length. If you have a section of the line, a segment, then the midpoint is the average of the lower and the higher value:

(L> + H) / 2

(Lower value plus higher value divided by two)

Note that if either of the values is less than zero you will have to think a little harder to get the absolute distance between them!
